I may have gone far too soon but I really lived my life my way
Because of who I was. I knew love and I knew pain
And I guess you could say that I certainly did it my way,
Somewhat like a runaway train.
I seized each and every moment, doing what I wanted without fear
I was a good Kiwi joker after all, so I was always one to chase the action!
I tried everything, chasing my dreams, breaking a few rules in the process
And causing more than a bit of grief, and I certainly did things to my satisfaction.
Now I’m gone and you are left to grieve and I’m sorry for that
Because there was so much more to do, so much more.
I guess it just wasn’t meant to be. I may have gone too soon, I know,
Yet what I leave behind is my eternal love, the good memories to be recalled
And the hope that in time, you’ll forgive me for going so soon
And let me live on in the hearts where I truly belong.

You don’t move on after loss, but you must move with. You must shake hands with grief, welcome her in, for she lives with you now. Pull her a chair at the table and offer her comfort. She is not the monster you first thought her to be. She is love. And she will walk with you now, stay with you now, peacefully. If you let her.

The tearing of a part of our soul

it is not her leaving you
it is the loss of her physical form
which you have been
so very used and attached to
And now she must remove that part
for it no longer serves you
and you no longer need it

And the split that you feel
is simply the new way
you will carry on your love

For she did not leave

As this heartless thing called Alzheimer’s made them fade away.
Gradually it took the gleam from those once so loving eyes.
To befall on such a giving man…it seemed so unjustified.
Stripping you of everything, leaving nothing in its place…
Except a look of sadness left upon your face.
As long as we have searched, through all the tears we’ve cried…
We’ve tried to find the reason for this long good-bye.
But now it’s time to take back all your memories…
As you are finally free from this cruel disease.
We pledge to remember the man that you once were;
A good hearted, giving man is all that will be heard.
And every night when we look up and see a certain star…
We will know within our hearts exactly where you are.
So on this day we say good-bye as you now depart.

Ah! Give me a boat with a sail and a mast –
It needn’t be tall, but it has to be fast.
As long as it takes me away on the tide,
I’ll sail it with eagerness, honour and pride.
I have to escape from that sad land-locked sort
Who cannot distinguish their starboard from port,
Who wouldn’t know how, if you gave them a sheet,
To tie a good knot, or belay to a cleat.
With all canvas set and good mates on my barque,
Gull-winged, I’ll rejoice to be first round the mark;
Or crossing the vastness of oceans at night –
Just being afloat gives me endless delight.
For nothing can match all the pleasure I’ve had –
Salt spray on my face – there’s no need to be sad.
I’ve loved every hour of it, make no mistake –
The troubles of life left behind in my wake.
So, up with the mainsail! I’ve called it a day,
And now on the breeze I will sail away.
No need for a Navman, like modern Jack Tars:
On my final voyage I’ll steer by the stars.

Is my idea of Heaven
-That’s if I’m selected
For the Mighty First XI.
To spend my time with bat and pad
Or bowling at the crease
Is all I ever want to do –
Not simply “Rest in Peace”.
A match could last a thousand days
Or only three or four
Who cares? As long as someone wins
Or we can force a draw.
And whether spin or pace I bowl,
I’m not a geriatric
The crowd will hold its breath when I
Am sitting on a hat trick
I’ll fling him down a googly one
(with very suspect action)
And tempt him to a reckless stroke
-to my great satisfaction
No need to “go upstairs” to see
If that was out or not
God’s finger tells the batsman that
He played a stupid shot
Or, if we’re in, then I will play
Whatever balls they mix
Not “leg before” or “caught behind”
But hammered for a six

When the Armada loomed
He finished off his game of bowls
England was never doomed
By his example we all know

The Roll Up’s the important thing
Whatever else may try us
In pairs, or fours and triples too,
Our days are measured out
To drive, or draw to either hand
Is what life’s all about
On green and rink, in dazzling white
To our best game we’re true
So when your bowls are in our way
We “weight” to follow through
In sun or breeze, we’re on the mat
Enjoyment is our aim
And if the weather’s not too hot
We’ll never skip a game
So while in life we’re all obliged
To play so many roles
I’d like to spend eternity

On The Green
For a Bowler
He loved the quiet of the green,
The sun warm on his back,
The soft, deliberate rhythm
Of bowl, and line, and track.
He knew the game was patience,
A steady hand, a steady heart,
Reading every gentle curve,
Treating each end like art.
He laughed with friends on breezy days,
Shared stories, jokes, and tea,
Content in simple company —
Exactly where he’d choose to be.
And when his final game was called,
He rose without a fuss,
At peace, the way he played his life —
With calm, with grace, with trust.

Hands covered in grime, lost all track of time
Tools in a heap on the floor
And for sure we all knew as he loosened each screw
That this bloke was enjoying the chore.
He would be in no doubt when the insides were out
What was needed to make the thing work
In his own quiet way, he would soon save the day
And he’d finish it off with a smirk.
For repairs you require just some No. 8 wire
And maybe some tricks of the trade
Or a new one of these, or a good bit of that
And will luck you will soon have it made.
But, alas for our mate, more repairs are too late
For his mending has come to a halt

If I ever have my statue in
the local Hall of Fame
it must be for my prowess at
the Royal and Ancient Game.
A hole in one, an albatross,
or seven under par:
it’s always been my aim in life
to be a golfing star
So if, for just a moment, you
can set aside your sorrow,
God’s given me the honour in
the tournament tomorrow.
The greens are smooth, the bunkers small,
the rough is hardly there;
the only hazard I know if,
is knowing what to wear.
No hook or slice or mangled shots,
-for those there isn’t time.
The caddy puts my divots back;
The Pro will says that I’m
A legend in the world of golf
if proof is need more,
Just come onto to the fairway now,
To hear me yell out: “Fore!”
A Sure Bet

I’ve picked some winners in my time
And backed some losers too.
(To bet the farm on some old nag
Is not the thing to do.)
But there’s the thrill of watching
As they thunder down the track
The standard-breds and trotters
Just keep me coming back.
The fields, the silks, the punters bring
More joy than I can utter
And fillies lined up on the rail
All send my heart a-flutter.
A race day is a great time out
On that I’ll stake my shirt
No matter what the dividend
That bet is a dead cert.
But winners come and winners go
As you might have supposed
Not every post’s a winning post
For me, the Tote has closed

The Unknown Shore

Sometime at eve when the tide is low,
I shall slip my moorings and sail away,
With no response to a friendly hail,
In the silent hush of the twilight pale,
When the night stoops down to embrace the day
And the voices call in the water’s flow.
Sometime at eve when the tide is low,
I shall slip my moorings and sail away.
Through purple shadows that darkly trail
O’er the ebbing tide of the unknown sea,
And a ripple of waters to tell the tale
Of a lonely voyager, sailing away
To mystic isles, where at anchor lay
The craft of those who had sailed before
O’er the unknown sea to the unknown shore.
A few who have watched me sail away
Will miss my craft from the busy bay;
Some friendly barques were anchored near,
Some loving souls that my heart held dear
In silent sorrow will drop a tear;
But I shall have peacefully furled my sail
In mooring sheltered from the storm and gale,
And greeted friends who had sailed before

Slip Away

God grant that I may live to fish until my dying day

Gone Fishing

The weather’s fine, the tides are right,
and all the time I’m wishin’
that nothing else will matter, just
as long as I’m out fishin’.
A leaky boat or rocky coast –
if it’s my favourite spot
the busy world can pass me by
the fish are runnin’ hot.
And if the catch is large or small
it doesn’t really matter
as long as I can eat the lot
smoked, fresh, or cased in batter.
The Great Beyond has endless seas
with not forbidden sectors,
or stormy days, or rotten luck
…. or fishery inspectors.
The little ones that got away
(to bend my rod were trying’)
I’ll say were huge – but I confess
my mates will know I’m lyin’.
So look for me from time to time,
and if you find me missin’,
be happy that for evermore
I’ve only gone out fishin’.
Occupation
Close the Gate

For this one farmer the worries are over,
lie down and rest your head,
Your time has been and struggles enough,
put the mule in the shed.
Years were not easy, many downright hard
but your love of the land transcended
Put away your tools and sleep in peace
the fences have all been mended.
You raised a fine family, worked the land well
and always followed the sun
Hang up your shovel inside the barn
your work here on earth is done.
The love you possess led your journey through life
often a jagged and stony way
The sun is setting, cattle are all fed
and here now is the end of your day.
Your love of Earth’s soil has
passed onto your kin
the stories flow like fine wine
Wash off your work boots in the puddle
left by the rain one final time.
You always believed that the good Earth
would provide and it always had somehow
Take off your gloves and put them down
no more sweat and worry for you now.
Your labour is done
your home now is heaven
no more must you wait.
Your legacy lives on
your love of the land
and we will close the gate.
A Nurse’s Prayer
Let me dedicate my life today
to the care of those who come my way.
Let me touch each one with healing hand
and the gentle art for which I stand.
And then tonight when day is done,
Let me rest in peace if I have helped just one.
I walk through corridors with pride,
Who’s life could I save tonight?
Who will be in need of care
Whose lot will be easier because I am there
Sometimes I cry because I can’t save them all
But I try to stay strong and stand so tall
I’ve witnessed a newborn baby’s first breath
And held a hand on the brink of death
I wiped a tear from a grieving eye
And comforted with just a smile
The night seems so dark and the morning so bright.
A nurse sees things in a different light.
Whose life could I save tonight?
I don’t know who these special people are
but I will meet them with every call
I will hold them tight and help the pain
Get them on their feet again
In every life, I see the beauty
I am a nurse, proud to do my duty.
A Teacher
The dictionary defines a teach as someone who teaches
But that hardly does justice to a profession that reaches
Far beyond just conveying some knowledge or skill,
For there are so many roles that a teacher must fill.
Counsellor, entertainer, motivational leader
Disciplinarian, comforter, accomplished mind-reader
A guardian who needs to be constantly aware
A mediator who must be unbiased and fair.
By whatever means necessary, teachers find a way
To meet the needs of all their students, each and every day
And their work does not end with the ring of a bell
For teaching’s not just a job, it’s a calling as well.
Teachers are a model of heartfelt dedication
Their hope is that their efforts will provide a firm foundation
And they know that if they’ve properly played their parts
Their success can be found in their students’ minds and hearts.

Footprints
One night I dreamed a dream.
I was walking along the beach with my Lord. Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life. For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me and one to my Lord.
When the last scene of my life shot before me I looked back at the footprints in the sand. There was only one set of footprints. I realized that this was at the lowest and saddest times of my life. This always bothered me and I questioned the Lord about my dilemma.
“Lord, You told me when I decided to follow You, You would walk and talk with me all the way. But I’m aware that during the most troublesome times of my life there is only one set of footprints. I just don’t understand why, when I need You most, You leave me.”
He whispered, “My precious child, I love you and will never leave you, never, ever, during your trials and testings. When you saw only one set of footprints, It was then that I carried you.”
God Called Your Name So Softly
God called your name so softly
That only you could hear
And no-one heard the footsteps
Of angels drawing near.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you did not go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
God’s Garden
God looked around his garden
And found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth

God saw you getting tired
and a cure was not to be
so he put his arms around you

With tearful eyes we watched you
and saw you pass away
and although we love you dearly
we could not make you stay.
A Golden heart stopped beating
hard working hands at rest.
God broke our hearts to prove to us
He only takes the best
I Have A Place In Heaven
I have a place in heaven
Please don’t sing sad songs for me,
Forget your grief and fears,
For I am in a perfect place
Away from pain and tears.
It’s far away from hunger
And hurt and want and pride,
I have a place in Heaven
With the Master at my side.
My life on earth was very good,
As earthly life can go,
But Paradise is so much more
Than anyone can know.
My heart is filled with happiness
And sweet rejoicing, too.
To walk with God is perfect peace,
A joy forever new.

To Everything There Is A Season
To everything there is a season,
